This is kind of a fun game. Below we have video of the Hinson Supercars RX7 packing a turbocharged LS1 engine. This was the car that made the quickest pass of Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week 2006 and we want you to take a stab at guessing how quick it was before pressing play.
We now know Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week as the event that sells out quicker than a boy band concert, draws cars from literally around the world, and stands as the preeminent test of street legal drag racing machinery in the world. But in 2006 it was just a small, two year old event that was still rising into the consciousness of hot rodders everywhere. The racers were not rock stars, there were no Facebook pages, no live videos, and certainly no recognition or idea about what the idea was to become in the years ahead. It was just a group of insanely hardcore hot rodders getting after it at a group of different tracks.
Before you take your guess, we’ll give you a guideline. In 2005 Larry Larson made the quickest pass of the inaugural event with an 8.38 elapsed time at US 131 Dragway in Martin, Michigan. We’ll be heading back there this year which is kind of neat as it will be my first visit back since that first Drag Week I attended. Larry’s car was a Lenco jamming, 555ci big block stuffed, 14-71 blown, pink missile and it blew our minds when he went into the low 8s.
The Hinson Motorsports RX7 had a turbocharged LS1 engine (exotica for the day!) and was very different from Larry’s car on the mechanical approach to getting the job done. Your job is to guess in your head before pressing play and seeing how close you can get to the actual number!
