Totally Mental: Guy Runs 8s In Australia While Column Shifting, In A Stock Seat, With No Bar, and Stock Belts

Totally Mental: Guy Runs 8s In Australia While Column Shifting, In A Stock Seat, With No Bar, and Stock Belts

This is one of those interesting situations where we LOVE the car. Like absolutely worship the car but it does something to us when we see a dude running 8s (granted, in Australia) with a stock seat, a stock belt, and no roll protection of any kind. With a low back seat, this guy’s neck is going to snap like a tooth pick if he hits the wall at the top end and that’s obviously just the beginning of the list here and we’re not going to run through it. Rather than preach we’re just going to say that we wouldn’t recommend trying this at home…or your local strip because they’ll fry your backside like it is bacon. But we digress…

The car is beautiful. Every inch of the exterior is right back at factory stock and the interior is also factory perfect. You know a guy is detail oriented when he decides to keep column shifting the car to not upset the flow of the factory interior. The good news is that he had no qualms messing with anything outside of the naked eye’s view. So the engine is an 807hp, turbocharged LS mill based off of an LQ4 block and running cathedral port style heads. The turbo is a Borg Warner 400 SX making 19psi the car has a hydraulic roller cam, a Powerglide, and a 3.25 geared rear axle with a Detroit TruTrac in it to keep both tires planted and working.

The best part of the video? The in-car footage of the dude driving it. We’re not sure we have ever seen someone in a drag car with a more “out and up” driving position, meaning the dude’s arms are at full extension and he’s reaching up for the wheel.  He manages 8-second runs but boy is he working in there to keep the thing straight. All the more reason a cage would be a good idea and a seat that wouldn’t serve as a guillotine when things don’t go right.

8s in a steel car is bad, bad fast and this thing clicks them off left and right. The adapters used on the LS heads to put small block valve covers on crack us up as well. People at car shows and in the pits must get real confused when they start looking the thing over. BangShift approved…just kind of scary!

Love the rear window blinds, totally added to the whole grandpa car scheme. That said I can’t believe any sanctioning body would allow the car to go down their track like this. Totally unsafe.

Seems like the Aussies have adopted the “On the Beach (1959)” theory of auto racing. We’ll all be dead tomorrow (nuclear war) so what the hell. Great movie with Gregory Peck.

If a guy trusts his car and driving let him hit it!!! He knows what he is doing signing the waiver. 11.50 cars here with not cage will get you killed in a hurry. Hell you could take a hard hit in a 14 second car and eat it!!!

  4. Ted who has become the old guy who worries about things........

I love performance more than anyone but I’m not understanding how the owner can risk anything with that driver’s seat moving about like it is. Watch the video again, that seat back is going to fold on one of these runs………..
