Best of BS 2016: This Naturally Aspirated Ultra Street Fairlane Thunderbolt Clone Run Five Flat In The Eighth

One of the craziest races in all of 2015 was the Outlaw Street Car Reunion which was held in Memphis last March. This was the famous “3s in the freeze” race where Jason Michalek ran his awesome Corvette into the three second zone with snow flakes falling from the sky. As you will see in the video below, everyone was bundled up like eskimos and while the air was freezing and the ground wasn’t much warmer, Tyler Crossnoe and VP Racing Fuels traction guru Jason “Pooch” Rueckurt had the track hooking insanely hard. Outside of the huge numbers put up by the “big” cars, there were fast runs happening all over the place. Proof is this really bad ass little Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt clone.

Powered by a NATURALLY ASPIRATED 585ci Ford big block that winds to BIG rpm, this car is shown making several runs in the Ultra Street category at the event. In a world of boost in all of its glorious forms, nitrous out the ying, this dude is throwing down old school and it runs hard. Now the car was obviously loving the cold, dense air that Memphis provided for it and while we cannot say for sure if any of these numbers are career bests, we will say that his final shot of 5.009/138 is absolutely hauling tail for a car that relies on nothing else other than efficient combustion to get itself down the track. The number one qualifier in the class was put up a 4.89/144 blast to give you a reference point as to where he was in comparison. That was the well known Mustang of Mark Rogers who runs a turbocharged Modular Ford engine under the hood. So hey, being a tenth off and running all motor is freaking Herculean in our book!

Ultra Street is a cool class. Cast intake manifolds, some pretty stout limitations on power adders and stuff of that nature, weights thats that are set mostly on engine combo with some other qualifiers thrown in and cars that look like cars and really scoot. Yes, the fact is that most of the entries were in late model bodied stuff and that probably makes us love the Fairlane/T-bolt clone even more. Plus there’s the sound. Holy smoke does this baby wail!

    Another Fairlane victory!

For true fans of this forgotten Ford – watch last year’s St.Mary’s Trophy race from the Goodwood Revival and see Tom Christensen’s epic drive from last on the grid to victory.

Awesome in the extreme, but I’m not sure of what motor he was running as most of the cars in this race have swapped-in bigger capacity motors. I’d put my money on a sorted FE – but watch that baby fly!

    First On Race Day!

Man that car launches straight. Fantastic car

Kinda stupid to park heavy equip in the run out area.

Great Car, just had to make Geordie happy on the Fourth, he will be unbearable now—(wonder what he thinks about the PG trans)

I was at the St Mary’s race at Goodwood last year and it was the best race I’ve ever witnessed. There is now a shrine to the winning FE Fairlane in my home
