This is one of those strange circumstances when a video is more about what you don’t see than what you actually do. This video shows a blown pro mod looking door slammer beginning a burnout and then exploding in spectacular fashion. The revs were way, way up and the thing backfired through the blower. This is normally a crummy situation for the racer because they have just lunched a lot of expensive parts but this one was exponentially worse. Why? Because there was either no containment device on the supercharger or the one that was on it failed and the results are scary as hell.
You’ll hear the engine explode and see the flash and then in the emptiness of the Motorplex you begin to hear a sickening rain of metal fall from the sky and land in the stands. The stands in front of the camera person are completely empty and we are going to go on the assumption that the ones behind them are empty as well. Some of those pieces seem pretty big judging by how deep a booming noise comes from said while being pummeled.
Blower bags and restraints have been around and mandated for hardcore cars like this one for a long, long time. While there is no such thing as a perfect method for dealing with a situation like this, whatever they were doing on this machine did not work at all. One can only imagine what the scene would have been if the stands were full!
This is a scary one and thankfully is serves as only a scary reminder about how there’s no real “safe” place at a race track. Next to the cars or many dozens of feet away, you never know when one may reach out and touch you!
