Would You Buy An Old Funny Car That Appeared In A Cult Classic Movie For $10,000

People freak out over cars that have appeared on television and in the movies, but how much is any of that worth? Take this car for example. The cool Corvette funny car appeared in the 1979 cult car film Hot Rod. As many of you know, the movie was based around the exploits of a couple of guys with a really cool Willys that raced it and took on “the man” for the greater good and to get the girl. This car really had nothing to do with the plot line and we can only guess that it appears in the “national event” scene in the film when our hero takes on all comers on the path to victory. The car looks pretty awesome with the body on it because of the cool paint and the way the body sits on the chassis.

Power comes from a tunnel rammed big block backed by an automatic transmission. The chassis looks interesting to us because it looks kind of like an early “wide” funny car chassis that would date from the middle 1960s. Judging by the way the body sits on the chassis, these two were not a matched pair from the start.

The seller claims that the chassis is certified so you could go out and have some real fun with this thing after updating the suspension and other components to be in a condition where they would not kill you on the first run. The chrome rear end could probably use a freshen up and the coil over shocks have seen better days. All that being said, this is kind of a neat car but is it $10,000 of neat car?

Also, if YOU were selling this car would you tout the “small screen” history that the old Corvette funny car has or would you just try to sell it on the merits of what someone can physically see in the ad?

Now I have to watch the movie again to see the Vette. I wonder if the Willys and Olds have survived.

‘Hope I’m thinkin’ of the right movie…

Mr. Steve Castelli of NorCal still races the “Hot Rod Willys”

I’ve seen it many times at Famoso at the March Meets and CA Hot Rod Reunions.

an engine, chassis and body for 10K? seems like a hell of a deal to me….

The movie is on youtube….just search “Hot Rod” Rebel of the Road.

I had one almost identical, I traded it for a T bucket, it is still around for about 2K, less motor/ trans.

As someone who has sold cars on ebay, and project cars, not the way I would do it. It’s a Buy-it-Now with Best Offer listing. The seller knows it will never go for 10K Likely he will take at-least $2K less if not more. He also thinks it’s like listing it someplace with a high price, where the right buyer will see it and work out some magic deal for 17% less and come with Cash and a enclosed car hauler.

If I were selling a car that was even in the background of a movie, I would mention it in the listing. If someone wanted a ‘period’ look car they could then do it to the appearance specs. If not they could get a still pic of the car from the movie and have a cool story to share over beers in the garage. I always pass on what known history I have on a Vehicle when sold.

As for what I think it’s worth: $2-4K.
