There are times when we need to be told that a car is classy. Times when we need to be reminded that something is a cut above the rest. Well, when it comes to a machine like this 1953 Buick Special Estate, nothing need to be said. Just look at it! This is a rolling example of class and dignity for sure. The 322ci Nailhead would scoot this baby along with about 160hp, the interior is wonderfully trimmed with its red and white leather, the mile long hood, the wood accents on the side. All of this is so good! All of this is also really expensive at $95,000.

When we see cars like this we try to picture who ordered them new. This one? We’re guessing a doctor ordered this station wagon and used it to make local calls and to head into his practice each day. It seems fitting for a doctor’s car, right? Room for stuff in the back, the class and elegance of being a Buick, the long roof design carrying that presence of importance around town? It works for us, anyway.

Supposedly only 1,830 of these cars were built on a special line by Buick in 1953. It seems that number would indicate maybe 900 or less of them actually exist today. As the 1950s wore on into the 1960s these were not fashionable cars. They were surf wagons, they were hand-me-downs to the kids, and they were likely driven to death before meeting the crusher in most cases. That makes this example all that much more interesting and cool because it is so well preserved.

We love it.

  1. Mopar or No Car

The interior is the right color but I only get excited over Buicks with four portholes. Also the fins. Hmm…

Yes, it’s a beautiful woody. If you want to see what stacks up well against this one try the Woodies on the Wharf show in Santa Cruz. I saw a white Packard woody with the swan hood ornament that was to die for.

Beautiful car. Look at it this way: the chrome & paint alone are worth $95K and you’re getting a ’53 Buick with a nailhead & stock Kelsey-Hays wire wheels for free. 🙂

Like the Caddy Employee who originally coined the phrase “We use to build Buicks and somewhere along the way, we just switched to building cars”
