Now THIS is amazing. You are going to watch this 1966 Pikes Peak video that features legendary racers Ak Miller and Bobby Unser hauling ass up the mountain. Of course back then the entire course was dirt, now the entire thing is paved. The dirt really tested the mettle and balls of the competitors for sure. While today’s stuff is faster and more technologically advanced it definitely does not have the character that the wagons these old guys drove! Miller was in a Devin bodied sports car packing a 427ci Ford engine. Its swoopy lines and open cockpit are the stuff dreams are made of. The sound dubbing is funny because the car sounds like it has six different engines in it as the different shots are used.
Bobby Unser is an American treasure and he’s at the height of his abilities in this video. The amount of work he has to do to keep the little open wheeled car he is hammering on is mind boggling. The steering wheel never ever stops moving. Even on the short straights he is constantly working the school-bus spec wheel because the car is ever actually hooked up at any point. If you don’t get chills watching the in-car footage and seeing him kick the thing around the corners, some of which would result in death of missed, you need a new hobby.
Two American racing legends in one video, both in awesome iron and driving their respective asses off. THIS is the good stuff.
