This 1968 AMC Rambler American 440 Wagon Has 998 Original Miles On it! Insanity

Yeah, this is one of “those cars” those freakish few who exist to remind us that there’s still some magic hiding out there. Still some stuff that no one has seen in years that has seemingly let the world pass it by without ever aging a day. This 1968 AMC Rambler American 440 wagon has 998 original miles and looks like it was built yesterday. This car is incredible. It was a pretty low option ride with the low buck inline six engine and three speed slip and slide automatic. White with white steel wheels, we can only imagine that there were some less than enthused kids in the house when dad rolled into the driveway with this ultimately sensible automobile. Now? Now it would be fodder for one of the coolest builds we could ever think of. Yeah, we’d screw with it.

We’d screw with it but not wreck it. Imagine building a Rambler Scrambler wagon that never was. 390, 4-speed, axle with some stiff gears in it, etc. The rear wheel wells would need a little mini-tub job because we’d want some 275 or 315 radials back there to complete the look. This car, with the looks it has, the white steel wheels, and 11-second time slips would be all time.

Yeah, there are likely those horrified at the thought of messing with a 998 original mile car but let’s be honest, this thing is never going to be some sort of big buck collector item so why not give it a more fun second lease on life, right? The car is insanely clean and perfect, it is a factory radio delete, and it’s one of the neatest things that we have seen pop up for sale on eBay. The price is $27,000, give or take. We’d try to bargain with them on this but in the end you are getting a car that does not need paint, does not need rust repair, and is only a drivetrain away from being among the coolest things we have ever seen.

What’s that worth?

If this dealer wants 27 grand for this wagon, I would be scared to see his prices for some of the Camaros in the background.

I would leave it just the way it is . I wouldn’t have the heart to cut it up . Cruise it . Let it take you back to the 60’s and 70’s if you are old enough to remember any of that . Whether you agree or not it is a piece of automotive history .

I’m with Lohnes. Turn that sucker into a SC/Rambler crew cab entended roof coupe. It’s already white. Just needs stripes. Build it as a N/SS car, with a big roller 390, stick, and 5.38’s so you gotta pull second while the front end is still in the air.

I have Ramblers, this is a Rambler ,they are cheap.Thats why I have Ramblers. I don’t care what the milage says. Its a Rambler it aint worth a third that money

People like you worry me. So it’s not a high-buck, high performance muscle car. Most true vintage cars aren’t. What it IS is a time capsule…a piece of automotive history…an example of what an AMC looked like straight from the factory. I hope a serious collector buys it—someone who can appreciate it for what is, not what it “could” be.

I too, would leave it alone. I had two 65 wagons. A 220, and a 330. I always thought this body style (more squared off in front) was better looking than my 65’s
Maybe after the novelty of this admittedly very ho hum car wore off, any of us might be persuaded to hot rod it. If you are into the “Show and Shine” thing, leaving it as is would be a winner. I just like to drive my stuff.
