When A Trar Isn’t: This 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix Was A Semi-Factory Backed Off Road Racer!

When A Trar Isn’t: This 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix Was A Semi-Factory Backed Off Road Racer!

Before you write this thing off as yet another unfortunate freak that we managed to find, hear us out for a second. This car, truck, thing is not a Trar in the traditional sense. No, this was a freaking racer that had limited factory backing from Pontiac.

As the story is told by the seller, Pontiac provided the car a Super Duty four cylinder engine, and other backing for this build as it was to be used in competition at the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Grand Prix events which were the formational and highly popular stadium off-road races that the legendary hot rodder was promoting and perfecting. Approached at SEMA by Terry Anderson with this wild plan, the brand decided to play along.

While the car is sitting on a Chevy truck frame, that was not the original plan. The build window was shrinking by the day and the only way they were going to get this rig to the track was to modify their plans. The rear mounted four banger originally sent power through a Cadillac trans axle, there is now a small block Chevy back there as the Pontiac was going to go desert racing after it was found to be way too heavy for stadium competition.

There’s enough good parts, and good fabrication here to actually back up the story attached to this thing. You need to read it all in detail at the link below. It’s among the most bizarre and interesting tales we have ever heard about a rig like this.

That time Pontiac wanted to go stadium off-road racing with a Grand Prix….really. Oh, and th thing is basically 4x more expensive than what it is worth. Carry on.
