2017 NSRA Street Rod Nationals: A Gallery Of Pre-1949 Iron! Hot Rods, Customs, and More

2017 NSRA Street Rod Nationals: A Gallery Of Pre-1949 Iron! Hot Rods, Customs, and More

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – Back to where it all started and still seems to showing up in the highest numbers.  Pre’49.  When NSRA determined that they needed to open the events up to newer models and adopted the ‘30yr’ rule we had our concerns as did many others.  Turned out it wasn’t all that bad.  We actually like the diversity.  Eventually the leaders will need to cap it because I don’t think anyone wants to see a C5 Corvette at a ‘street rod’ event.  Stuff like that might take the ‘old car’ vibe away.

Anyway – the cars in this album represent the roots of our sport and are still captivating onlookers.  When I get around folks more into later-model stuff I hear the moniker ‘cookie-cutter’ used to describe the pre-49 bunch.  Well, I can see that since these cars have been around for so long just about every combination has been used.  I also know that this bunch still has tricks in their bag to bring us fresh and interesting combinations.  Stale…?  Scroll down the page and look at the screaming-green T with the leaning tower-of-power exposed for all the world to see.  How cool is that…?  One trend we really like is an upgrade from the ‘resto rod’ there where the cars look even more like a restoration, but have the latest tech in comfort and drivability.  Many have rolling stock that look the part, but are sized to clear large and ample braking.  New twists and traditional combinations are a big part of what keeps us interested in this aspect of the gearhead world.

Enjoy.
