(Words and photos by David Whealon) – We’re back with the marquis class of the Pirelli World Challenge series from the Virginia International Raceway. The GT SprintX classes features 500+ HP of exquisite livery consisting of the GT3’s of the Ferrari 488, Mercedes-AMG, Porsche 911, Bentley Continental, Audi R8 and the Lamborghini Huracan.

This Pro/ Am class eclipses the 3.27-mile, 17-turn course at blistering average speeds up 115 mph. The 16 car, one hour, one driver change contest made for a boatload of action in Round 4 for the GT SprintX cars in the PWC eleven circuit season. With the clock ticking and a mandatory driver change in-between, one hour gives the drivers no time to be pussyfooting around. The outside pole starter of the Fabian Schiller/ Daniel Morad No. 2 CRP Racing/DeVilbiss Mercedes-AMG GT3 took an early lead but was only to be shuffled to second after the polesitter Maxime Soulet/ Rodrigo Baptista No. 3 K-PAX Racing Bentley Continental’s quicker pit stop. Baptista held onto the lead up until home track veteran Mike Skeen driving the No. 80 Lone Star Racing Mercedes-AMG took the point with an awesome pass rounding the Left Hook Turn 4 with less than three minutes remaining. Road course racing at it’s finest. The 34 lap showdown surely lived up to the class name, Sprint, even with this old guy sprinting to hit as many of the eleven photographer access gates that the track has to offer. I only managed to hit one gate but stopped to get a few spectator angles in making my way to Victory Lane. Sure would have been nice to have a blown hemi on that E-Z-GO!!

Check out the links below for a full race report and a video of the late race pass from race winner Mike Skeen!!
