(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – The first Wings and Wheels event at Cynthiana-Harrision County Airport was in April 2013. I remember this because it was the first event we ever took our then newly-acquired ’64 Chevy II. It was chilly and a bit damp. There were more airplanes than cars and there weren’t many of either. The first ten photos of this gallery are from that event and though it doesn’t show everything there it also doesn’t miss much. Humble beginnings. Fast-forward to the same event on an absolutely perfect day in April 2018 and the growth of this event is readily apparent. Co-event organizers, Kevin Florence and Rejeana Craft, should be proud of how much support has enjoyed thus far. The great weather didn’t hurt either following a Winter for the record books. Plenty of planes, more than a handful of helicopters, and over 100 cars showed up at this small, municipal airport for a day of gawking, food, and music.
A few in this gallery will be familiar if you follow our coverage of the Cynthiana Rod Rod (big event….2,000+ vehicles) and many you have not seen here previously.
First one I’ll mention is the Red S10 with the TPI motor and cool graphics. This truck was featured in Sport Truck, Car Craft, and more back in the early 90s when it’s builder/owner, Mark Portman, paraded it around. The truck sports Taylor’s House of Color paint and sat lower on 3-piece billet wheels back then. Mark sold it 25 years ago and had no idea where it was until I let him know the thing lives here in Central Kentucky – much as it was back then. Cool stuff.
The 427 C2 coupe was extra special nice. It looked right at home amongst the aircraft.
Early Plymouth 5-window coupe was looking rather spiffy and was definitely not on the bottom-end of the price market when new. Lots of neat features, but the one we like the most is the wing windows can roll down with the door glass as one unit. Neat.
This ’69 Z/28 is something special. The owner has had it since the mid-70s. It has the DZ302 and the cross-ram intake with two Holleys (with no choke). It’s only departure from stock is the famed 140 ‘off-road’ cam. This thing definitely hits a lick. The chambered exhaust, brilliant color, three-pedals, and a cheerful owner made this thing a delight. When the event was over and most everyone had dispersed this beauty was still in the paddock which gave us a great opportunity to get some clean shots.
Enjoy and come back for more from this event.
