We Drive It: The 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor Is A High Horsepower, Capable Family Truckster

When it comes to the things that American car companies do right, full sized SUVs lead the list. Being able to leverage the technology in truck chassis and drivetrain development while combining it with spacious interiors and all the whiz bang gadgets and widgets that engineers can conceive, they’re big money, big status, and big profit centers for these companies. The 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor is a perfect example of this and in our estimation, it’s every bit as good as the offerings across the domestic SUV landscape.

This combination of driving dynamics, 440hp engine, luxury interior, and modern styling makes the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor among our favorite vehicles that we have driven this year.

There’s something relaxing about climbing behind the wheel of a rig the size of the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor. Whether it’s the fact that there’s so much space, the fact that there’s a really nice dose of luxury around the interior, or the fact that this big beastly thing can really haul with 440hp and a 10-speed automatic, the whole experience is really pleasant.

We really liked the exterior looks of this latest Expedition. The brushed style finish on the wheels, the subtle accents in a copper/gold hue, the 33″ tires, and the running boards don’t just lend to the idea of off-road toughness, they actually combine to make the off-road themed Tremor look more upscale and refined. It’s a neat trick that few have gotten right in the styling and design of these trucks over the years.

A lot off times with machines like the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor, the “off-road” side of things tends to dominate the driving feel, suspension action, and overall experience of the vehicle. Not so, here. For starters, despite the reasonably aggressive (for a factory truck) tires, there’s no dum, no drone, and no degradation of the handling of the massive SUV. It’s sure footed on the road and does not float, wander, or do anything you’d hope it wouldn’t. It’s also not a sports car. This is a roughly four ton SUV so it’s not about carving corners as much as it is about getting people and things from place to place in comfort.

The ride is, dare we say, exactly what you’d want out of a machine like this. It’s the very nice balance between softness and stiffness. There is a rolling, floating nature to the Expedition on smooth pavement and when things get choppy you can feel the bumps but they are isolated well in the suspension and don’t cause the long wheelbase Ford to undulate or porpoise.

The tried and true 3.5L displacement EcoBoost V6 in our tester was making 440hp. This is the optional high output engine whereas the standard engine makes 400hp. Is the additional 40hp needed that much?  We’re not sure there is a single BangShifter that would turn down an additional 40hp under any circumstances so we’re saying yess. The fact of the matter is that we live in the most incredible performance era that has ever existed. We know, we know, muscle cars rule and they do but get this. This 5,668lb beast gets from 0-60 in barely more than five seconds and can run 13.80s in the quarter mile. Thank you extra 40hp and 10-speed automatic transmission.

As we have experienced the 10-speed in many different trucks and SUVs at this point, we can say with confidence that it’s a very, very good unit. As it works up and down through the gears the shifts, especially at part throttle are almost imperceptible. Upshifts through multiple gears are snappy and precise.

The powertrain package makes the the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor perhaps more than any other element…except the interior.

I spent the better part of a week and about 1,000 miles in the back seat of an Expedition during 2025 Hot Rod Magazine Drag Week. It was a pleasurable experience which featured legitimately comfortable seats, so much leg room that it was never even a thought to notice, and a cabin quiet enough for plenty of comfortable conversation no matter the speed or style of road.

The Tremor package kicks the interior niceness up a notch but also, like the exterior plays its off-road themed hand. this time with the rubber floor mats which can handily catch any mud or other mire that you’ll be collecting out in the woods or on the trail.

As far as the front of the Expedition and the driver’s area, I have to being a huge fan of the squircle style steering wheel. I enjoy the way it can be held, how it is actually a unique feeling experience to manipulate it, and how it frees up a lot of leg room while also allowing a nice open viewing experience to the digital dash.

This gives a better perspective on the wheel and the dash layout. The upper screen has a low enough profile for the driver to easily look out over it. The center screen in the dash is well sized, easy to operate, and we always have to enjoy the access to buttons and dials beyond the touchscreen. Tactile things are good in our book. The interior is on the mark for theming and execution although we sure would have appreciated a few more dashes of color in here. It’s monotone and darker than we’d prefer.

As we value simplicity around here, the seemingly overly complicated rear lift gate which is combined with a stubby little truck style tailgate that is electronic, this just seems a bit much. We get what they were going for here but eliminating the stubby gate or making the whole program manually operable would make us think differently about it. This just seems like a failure point waiting to happen in our eyes.

No complaints on the amount of room. As you can see with the third row followed down (electronically) you could practically live here. The Tremor option is only available on the standard sized Expedition, not the longer Max version so what you are seeing is the “standard” volume of space.

Final impressions? Rigs like the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor are the modern American luxury cars, no doubt about it. They perform, they have size, they have presence, they even have attitude. With a list price of well over $80,000 they also have a hefty price tag but companies cannot make them fast enough, still.

The 2025 Expedition Tremor has the chops to sling mud, the looks to cruise the city in style, and the fit and finish to take even your most discerning and upscale pals in the kind of comfort, luxury, and performance that they’ll be impressed with. We sure were.
