We Drive It: The 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport – Command, Control, and Cool

When it comes to what American car companies still do very, very right these days, the 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport is the perfect example. A vehicle with the commanding presence of great style, the interior experience of great luxury, and the performance experience of a V8 that makes all the right noises and makes all the right power, this is what the top of the SUV food chain looks like, to us. Surely there are those that deride a vehicle like the 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport for all the reasons we love it but frankly we kind of do the same thing to a lot of uninspired, blob-ish people movers designed to do the bare minimum to get a person from place to place. The 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport is experiential and will be whenever you jump into it, walk up to it, or listen to it fire up with a cool, calm, authoritative burble.

The Cadillac Escalade has definitely become part of the major design language of not just General Motors but the whole large SUV class over the course of the last 26 years since it came onto the scene to compete with the Lincoln Navigator. As history shows and tells us, it didn’t simply arrive on the scene, it became the industry standard. While it may have been rushed to arrive, it was certainly not harried in the way many automotive mistakes are made. It’s very fair to day that Cadillac not only won the short term battle with the Navigator but it certainly won the long term battle with the Escalade being more than a luxury SUV but also an on-going piece of pop culture status.

The Cadillac Escalade’s design language has evolved with time but it’s maintained its identity which is not an easy thing to achieve. The crisp lines that the early Escalades were known for during the “Art and Science” era of Cadillac still live on but in more modern form here. As large a vehicle as the Escalade is, it does present itself well and as a reasonably athletic looking beast, to boot. The crispness of the nose, hood, and rear belt line keep the look taught and not flabby or over the top in terms of size and to a large degree create the dignified appearance of the Escalade.

420hp backed up by a 10-speed automatic transmission that shifts like butter means that you are never on the wrong side of the horsepower battle on the street. Of course there is the 628hp V-option here as well but if you are wondering if a rig that weights about 6,000lbs can actually get up and hustle, wonder no more. This thing can boogie and won’t leave you feeling that you’re underpowered at all. It can tow a bunch as well, so if you are dragging the boat to the lake or maybe your racer to the drag strip or road course, you’ll be handled. There’s not a lot to expound on with power but only just to say that for the money and for the expectation, this 6.2L/10-speed combination certainly delivered the goods that we were asking for when we got aggressive with the pedal.

The real test of the 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport for us came when we opened the doors and climbed inside. With a price tag well north of $100,000, there are some high expectations to be met when it comes to the tactile experience of operating the Escalade as well as as that of the people who will be in there with you. From tip to stern Cadillac nailed it here. If we start with the materials, everything in the cabin feels elevated. The perforated leather on the seats was supple and soft, the steering wheel, the carpet, the headliner. This does not feel like you are sitting in some sort of dressed up GMC or Chevrolet. This feels like its own space, its own model and it feels pretty damned good in there overall.

There is a vault like quiet during the driving experience. The faint rumble of the 6.2L V8 is nice to have as a reminder that you have lots and lots of power to dive into when you feel like it, but the quiet authority the Escalade exudes from the inside out is impressive without being imperious.

Technology wise, there are huge screens for passengers to take advantage of and those could be kids watching their favorite shows or honestly business people reviewing a digital presentation on the way to a meeting or any measure of the two in-between. The look and finish of the screens is a far cry from how awkward such installations were in vehicles years ago. These are integrated and sized perfectly.

The awesomely simple elegance of the dashboard really impressed us. There was an era when a Cadillac or any luxury car meant more buttons, knobs, and widgets to play with the more it costs. Clearly the ethos of this category of vehicle has changed and now it is about minimalistic, beautiful, clean design. Yes there are loads of functions, yes the passenger can effectively program their own side of the dash to see and do what they want, but as you can see, this is just subtle and clean design. We loved the look of the “continuous” vent below the full width unbroken dash screen that passes from one side of the cabin to the other. Capping the ends with the speakers was also fitting and a nice touch.

Great design in cars, especially in those that approach and or exceed the six figure mark always lands on a couple of factors to us. Does it look right? Does it work right? Does it all make sense? In these two photos you can see that clearly all those questions were answered with a strong yes. It looks gorgeous. It’s such a modern kind off spin back to the classic Cadillacs of the 1960s without being cheesy or corny. It has that open functional feel, yet it’s refined and the tech is being showcased with some subtlety. The lower touchscreen is the most nicely formed and placed one we’d seen from any car in years. That seamless integration to the central part of the dash is a chef’s kiss.

The 2026 Cadillac Escalade Platinum Sport is everything you’d want it to be and expect it to be if you were looking for a premium SUV from an American manufacturer. It has been a very important model for the Cadillac lineup since the late 1990s and they treat it as such. Where other things may have faltered over the years, the Escalade has continued to age well and gracefully. This is a large, elegant, technological tour de force, powered by a classic American V8, and finished with European quality fit and execution. If you are in the market for a vehicle in this space and you don’r drive the Cadillac, you’ll have made a massive mistake. We hated to see this one go. The Escalade, still great after all these years.
