(By Tom Lohnes) – In recent years, Alfa Romeo has not been good at keeping promises. Both the revival of the 8C sports car and a 2-door version of the Giulia carrying the GTV nameplate have been scrapped, and the only new vehicle to come out of the italian marque since 2018 is the subcompact Tonale crossover, which does pretty much nothing for the brand other than boost numbers. Well, in Alfa Romeo’s most recent Instagram post, a taillight is teased towards the end, and it appears to confirm rumors of a legit supercar coming from the famed Milan-based race car manufacturer. Interesting…
Very little is known about this new supercar. Since the One-off Giulia SWB Zagato was very recently released as a front-engine, rear-drive small coupe, a mid-engine setup would make sense, and Alfa’s excellent 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 that is famously a Ferrari V8 with a cross-plane crank swap and two cylinders lopped off should find itself in the car regardless of where it is. Alfa Romeo executives have made it very clear in multiple interviews that this new halo car is not a reskinned Maserati MC20, which raises the question of transmission. Maserati rocks a turbo V6 and a DCT in their supercar, which would make the two cars way too similar to financially justify development of two completely different platforms, especially low-volume ones. Alfa has been teasing us with a manual transmission-equipped Giulia for years, so a proper 6-speed box linked to the gnarly V6 would make this lightweight RWD supercar quite an experience to drive. We can only hope.
Then, there is the topic of styling. With the Giulia being a legitimately beautiful sedan, the Stelvio making ugly SUV proportions not ugly anymore, and even the Tonale holding its own against competitors, all clues point to this new supercar being an absolute stunner. Rumors say the vehicle will be carrying the “6C” name, so it has big shoes to fill looks-wise.
We will have to wait and see the finished design, but apparently we won’t have to wait that long. Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Phillipe Imparato has hinted at a March 2023 release date for their newest range-topper, so all will be revealed in the spring. A six-figure car with an Alfa Romeo badge on the front doesn’t exactly scream “Financial success”, so it will definitely be interesting to see what the bring out. Expect more details to leak before the official debut.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia does look quite beautiful and unique. I hope it draws inspiration from the 4C Spider.
