Normally, the idea of spectator drag racing in our heads involves a small asphalt circle track, a motley crew of machines, and an announcer that sounds like Lohnes after a few beers in his system, going deep into the Boston accent. How to say it nicely…it’s not the most sophisticated event out there. You won’t see Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton throwing down in $3,000 Craigslist beaters anytime soon, so sorry if that’s where your hopes were at. But for a weekday night, you can’t beat the entertainment value, especially when you have drivers that know just what the hell they are doing behind the wheel. If you don’t think that at least a couple of these good ol’ boys don’t fancy themselves as undiscovered talent, you might want to take a look at some of the more recent footage that has come out of Beech Ridge in Maine. Pay close attention to both Oldsmobiles and the hybrid 3rd Generation F-body that come out swinging, but don’t write off the olive-green Honda that makes some killer Turn 3 attempts or the guy in the Subaru wagon who made sure that the all-wheel-drive gave him every possible advantage off of the line. Normally, we wait until the crash inevitably happens, but these are some really decent runs!
