Another Competitor Enters The Ring: The Aston Martin Vulcan Has Arrived To Do Battle In The Track-Only Hypercar War

Ferrari FXXK. McLaren P1 GTR. Both of these sociopathically-fast hypercars have one thing in common: they are track-only vehicles. Ferrari pretty much rents the FXXK, much like it did the 599XX, to “owners”, while the P1 GTR stands a better chance of going home with the owner after a hard day of whipping up competition on the track. It’s been kind of odd to see this upper-class horsepower war going on, but hey, any advancement in automobiles is fine by us and a new name has now thrown their hat into the ring. Meet the Aston Martin Vulcan.

Aston hasn’t released much in the way of details on the Vulcan, but here’s what we do know: the V12 has been punched from 5.9L to 7.0L, and we don’t know if it’s an all new block or a seriously reworked version of the Aston motor. Whatever the case, it’s expected to be well north of the 800hp mark. The V12 is mounted front-mid and it’s a rear-wheel drive setup using an Xtrac six-speed sequential box mounted in an FIA-legal chassis. Aston claims that the Vulcan has a better power-to-weight than a typical GTE race car. Good God.

But what else do you get for dropping a not-so-small fortune on a Vulcan? Since Aston Martin doesn’t want to see their new babies wadded up in Turn Four, buyers will also receive technical driver training by a team of Aston race drivers, led by the LeMans-winning Darren Turner. Using such high-performing Astons as the V12 Vantage, One-77 and the Vantage GT4 race car, “clients” will be trained on how to properly handle a car as capable as the Vulcan before being cut loose on their own. Since there will be only 24 Vulcans made, chances are very good that even if you have the money (well north of $2.7 million, thank you), that all of the keys have been spoken for. The Vulcan will make it’s public debut at the Geneva Auto Show next month.

That’s a pretty good idea to provide driver training with something like that. And the looks are stunning.
