Here Is The Only Classic Mustang Rack And Pinion Conversion That Works

Rack and Pinion conversions suck. It’s the truth. I’ve installed a bunch of them, and with rare exception they are junk. This system from Total Control Products is the exception. It works. Just like they say it will, and it installs just like they say it will. The same cannot be said for most of the rest of them. Which is why the gang at Chassisworks and Total Control Products have spent so much time and energy making this one so good. It is available for Comets, Cougars, Falcons, Mustangs, And Rancheros. The newest offering is for the 1971 – 1973 Mustangs.

Applications:

  • Comet 1960-65
  • Cougar 1967-73
  • Falcon 1960-65
  • Mustang 1964-73
  • Ranchero 1960-65

I take exception to the statement “Other racks decrease ground clearance, actually becoming the lowest piece of the car. This would allow the rack to touch the ground when going over speed bumps or in the event of a flat tire.”

The rack is inside the tire’s circle be default, not being familiar with the classic Mustang I can’t say if it’s inside the wheel. If you are going over speed bump anything but a severe enough angle to have one wheel go completely over and the other not come on yet the rack (and pretty much everything else in that area) isn’t going to hit the speed bump. As for the flat tire, I guess it’s possible but the rack again is going to have to be outside of the wheel’s circle by more than the deflated tire adds to the radius.

Now I’m not arguing that this kit isn’t the best available (no idea, don’t own anything that it’ll fit) just not agreeing with a bit of the marketing hype.
