When wheel locks started to become a real thing in the 1970s nobody realized that these devices would in fact be the reason for their own demise. You see within the first week of the first 100 sets of wheel locks being sold, someone forgot where they put the key and couldn’t get their lugnut off to remove a tire to fix a flat. And it just snowballed from there. With rare exception, every one of us who has owned a vehicle with wheel locks has at some point lost the key and freaked out until it was either found or we had to use some other tool to remove them. If you are “smart” and keep the key with the vehicle, that’s great except if your thief decides to look in the car for the key real quick. Center console or glovebox, maybe driver’s door pocket, and they have it. One minute of searching and they are good to go. Or they have a wheel lock extractor set, which can be purchased from hundreds of suppliers, and it makes quick work when combined with the right hammer, breaker bar, and cordless impact.
So with all these things being said, is there a wheel lock that is actually worth having? Is there one that really works and can’t overcome most of the methods out there that a wheel thief would try?
