I grew up as a die hard Chevrolet car and truck guy, but when I first started paying attention to vehicles outside the muscle car family there was no doubt that a Lamborghini was one sexy machine. I remember having a Lamborghini poster on my wall in the early to mid 1980’s and often staring at the cool lines and features that they came with. But when I first heard them, on the 60 Minutes Episode featuring Valentino Balboni test driving them, that sound of that V12 had me. These are some of the most amazing sounding road engines anywhere and I hope to someday own one. This is a car that speaks to me, and I’m not alone. So when Leno decided he was going to post this great video featuring a road and marine engine from Lamborghini I was enthralled. These two engines sound amazing! Watch the video, learn a few things, and thank Ferrari for Lamborghini becoming an icon. Watch the video to learn why.
These are two very similar engines in that they both work on the same architecture. One is just 3.5 liters but makes over 300 horsepower naturally aspirated, the other is 8 liters which is nearly 500 cubic inches. Both are all aluminum dual overhead camshaft engines. One is carbureted with 6 Webers and the other uses Electronic Fuel Injection. The larger engine is a marine engine, and as far as these guys know has never been installed in a car. It weighs nearly 1,000 pounds, which is 200 more than a traditional 426 style HEMI. That’s serious girth, but man would it be fun to see this in something big. Hearing the two of them running on stands in Leno’s shop is pretty cool. After all, who gets to put a Lambo engine on a run stand normally? It sure would make a cool decorator item for the living room!
