While the 1970s-spec film that exists around the famed Can-Am series if good, none of it really does a fantastic job of relaying the sheer brutality of the cars involved. These things were flyweight, glorified go-karts that were powered by large aluminum big blocks that could make 7-900hp depending on who you talk to. This car should have an all-aluminum big block Chevy with mechanical fuel injection on top of it. The Shadow DN4 is one of the most iconic cars of the Can-Am era because of its looks and raw performance. The beauty of this video is that we get to ride in the car with a modern, high definition camera and get some speed related telemetry as well. On the power and out of a corner, this thing would put a lot of drag race cars to shame.
To us, it is astonishing that there was not a large death toll in Can-Am racing. How that’s possible we’ll never know because when the track is filled with stuff like this, all stuff like this, you figure guys would be eating it every race and unlike today’s car, these suckers were not designed to crash. They’d have had to have cleaned guys up with a squeegee if they piled an equivalent machine up at 180mph.
Craig Bennett is the driver here and this dude is a bad ass. He is smooth and fast and seemingly fearless. The thing flirts with 180mph a couple of times. Truly an amazing ride!
Thank you , one to the best tracks around!!!
Hope to see some races their this summer
