We have long championed autocross action as one of the easiest and most budget friendly ways to have fun in a car. From the seriousness of an SCCA event to the fun and frivolity of local gatherings, there’s room for cars and people of all types at an autocross. The video below exemplifies the type of fun available and it does so in the best way possible, by putting us in the car! The videos shows a father and son team who seem to compete in the same Mazda Miata at various autocross venues across the Pacific Northwest. It seems we get glimpses at Seattle, Portland, and other venues along the way here.
To us, this video also does a great job of showing off how fun absolutely thrashing a Miata can be. Sure, the big horsepower set likes to talk down on the little convertibles but the reality is that they are cheap and more fun than a barrel full of monkeys when you drive them at 10/10ths.
Realize that we are laughing with these guys and not at them. Seeing the father and son swatting bees, sawing on the wheel, riding out arcing slides, and hanging the tail out through the cone “gates” of the course is fun, especially to be seeing it from the perspective of a dash cam.
You can autocross anything (keep your lifted trucks at home) and have fun doing it. The harder you push yourself and your equipment the more fun you’ll have. Driving something like you stole it and doing it with a smile is the definition of automotive enjoyment and these two guys are clearly living right with their little Miata! Watch below.
