It was a great weekend of action at the NMCA west event which was held on the grounds of Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, California. We were there blasting photos of the drag racing as well as the Hotchkis Autocross which was filled with late model and classic pro touring muscle burning through the cones. We think that it is a great thing that the NMCA and Hotchkis hooked up to put this series of autocrosses on because it accomplishes a couple of different things. Firstly, it gives the fans of cars that turn a place to race and challenge themselves and secondly it brings two groups together that have more in common that they know.
If you don’t think an autocross guy has wandered over and seen the fun the drag race guys are having and then gave it a shot or a drag race guy watching the autocross and thinking that he’d like to hammer the gas, brakes, and use the wheel more, you are crazy. The expansive pavement at Fontana provides enough space for a fun course where competitors can get a good head of steam up as well as some tight technical sections.
You will see everything from late model Mustangs to a classic “crew cab” Chevelle in these photos and that’s proof of the wide net the autocross world is casting these days. Long gone is the era where the only guys that autocrossed were sporty car types with patches on their elbows and driving gloves. Hairy V8 engines, big revs, sticky tires, and bolt on components make this fun for everyone.
