Hero Stuff: Watch A Young Didier Pironi Attack The US Grand Prix In A Tyrrell F1 Car 40+ Years Ago

This video from the 1978 US Grand Prix is awesome. You are going to ride on the Tyrrell Formula One car being driven by Frenchman Didier Pironi. Pironi was very early on in his F1 career at this point and his career would carry him into the 1980s driving for various teams in the sport. Famously, he was involved with an incident that included Gilles Villeneuve which some people say angered the Canadian driver so much he suffered a fatal wreck at the next race while pushing too hard.

Pironi would unfortunately suffer a massive wreck of his own in 1982. His legs were mangled and he would never drive in Formula one again. He did think about making a comeback but his insurance company would have demanded a massive repayment if he took another F1 ride. Crazily enough, he COULD go boat racing so he went off-shore power boat racing and was killed along with his crew when they struck a wave at speed and the boat flew over backwards. Incredibly one of his sons, who was still a baby then would eventually become an engineer with the Petronas F1 team and was there in 2020 when the operation won the championship.

Just look at how evil these cars were back then. Totally analog, wildly powerful for the chassis, and a true handful of a beast for the driver!
