Double Down by Fuller Hot Rods Is Stealing The Show At SEMA 2013

Double Down by Fuller Hot Rods Is Stealing The Show At SEMA 2013

You’ve seen plenty of photos of the awesome “Double Down” all wheel drive 1932 Ford roadster built by Fuller Hot Rods here at SEMA 2013, but we really cannot get enough of this car. We were wondering how Fuller would top the jaw dropping Thundertaker build and he did it by crafting one of the all time wildest deuce roadsters ever conceived. Commissioned by Jet Hot High Performance Coatings the car will be used at the drags, on the autocross course, on road courses and we have been told that there is a trip to Bonneville planned for the car in the future as well (the distant future is our understanding). Anyway, Fuller has the car here at SEMA 2013 and while it is still in the construction phase, people are abuzz about the fabrication work, the engine choice (a Kaase built Boss 429) the quick change housing protruding from where the radiator would normally be located, the huge by large circle track slicks on the corners, the magnesium racing wheels, and the bare metal state that it currently sits in.

While we’d love to see this baby rocking and rolling under its own power, being able to see it with the bones exposed is great. It is the first and maybe the last time we will ever look down into the guts of a Ford roadster and see a transfer case right there in the middle of the action! Fuller has made a name for himself with unique and functional cars over the last several years with the aforementioned Thundertaker, the Impaler, and now Double Down. With the Jet Hot coated headers featuring a custom color blend hanging out the side and all of the truly cool metal work on full display, this car is a buffet for the gearhead eyes. There’s pure bitchin’ happening at every corner.

Fuller has been occupied when we have dropped by the car thus far but when we do corner him, look for an interview about the challenges they have faced so far, the challenges coming in finishing the car, and what the hell he thought about when the idea was proposed. This will be a polarizing machine. Some (like us) will absolutely love it, some will dislike it strongly, but one thing that is not open for dispute is the quality of the work on the car thus far. This is a mind-blower.

The answer to last weeks question ( unprepped ) track ?
    will the transfer hold ?
    will front cv’s hold ?
will that break the U joints ?
will it just drive it off the track or right down track ?
    Cool though

wow, not so much on the looks of the front diff hanging out but man is it bad ass! NV149 come under some light trucks and its got a viscus coupler, should be more than tough enough.

Is that an NV261 Transfer Case? A straight up shiftable truck transfer case, 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. It sure looks like it. If so, why? Get something useful for the application. An old shcool truck transfer case is just stupid for the application. An Escalade open diff transfer case makes more sense than this thing.

Auto cross? Not with that transfer case in 4WD. It is going to be binding the driveline up so much in tight turns that will only hurt handling.

The only thing that transfer case is getting this car is straight line traction. What it really needs is a unit with a torsen or something active.

There’s a lot of cool work there and an AWD system that is just a bunch of dead weight.

FYI: Wes Rydell has had a beautiful 4 wheel drive supercharged roadster for a number of years, this is not new…just saying, very nice build though.

I see no reason why the front end should bind up..
Syclone by GMC was an all wheel drive, I did not notice binding…

    This thing screams cool!

Since when did Clecos sticking out of a show car become a thing? It’s like leaving sockets on the header bolts.
