Driver’s OK, Car Sure Isn’t: Check Out Derrike Cope’s Unexplained Explosion From Watkins Glen!

Driver’s OK, Car Sure Isn’t: Check Out Derrike Cope’s Unexplained Explosion From Watkins Glen!

If this doesn’t make it into a NASCAR Top 10 list somewhere this year, someone’s fired, because this is the strangest thing we’ve seen from roundy-round racing this year. During an Xfinity Series race at Watkins Glen, Derrike Cope’s Camaro stocker literally exploded without any real warning. That’s not being dramatic in any way, either…with the car coasting through the straightaway section betweens turns 4 and 5, better known as the “bus stop”, there was no way to predict that an explosion would rock the Camaro so hard that the hood would be buckled and hanging on by a thread and a front tire would be punctured. Cope was uninjured, but as of press time there was no word on the condition of his fireproof underwear. NASCAR has impounded the car and will take it back to Concord, North Carolina to have everything inspected and to determine what blew up like a hand grenade. The peanut galleries on social media have already started speaking up, asking the crews to look for the nitrous bottle or to see if the blower case is the cause.
