This incredible, home movie footage from the 1968 Daytona 500 ranks on the top of the charts as far as vintage stock car movies go. Why? Ironically for none of the reasons that modern slick videos blow our collective minds. This movie is fantastic because it is home video footage that someone took from the pits, presumably during qualifying for the 1968 Daytona 500.
The cars, sweet mother of mercy, the cars. If you can sit through this eight minutes and not get the urge to build a muscle car into a late 1960s NASCAR clone (race paint job or not) you don’t have a soul. Outside of the cars you’ll see Foyt, Andretti, Tiny Lund, Petty, and a host of legendary American race drivers walking around the pits and literally oozing cool out of their pores.
There’s not a damned bit of editing, lots of shaky footage, some of the colors seem whacked out a little, but we’ll be damned if this isn’t the coolest eight minutes of vintage NASCAR video we have ever watched. Just the freaking cars alone!!!

That was interesting. The film is a combination of what was then called Sportsman cars and Grand National cars, today they are the Infinity and Cup series. I was actually there in 1968.
People wonder why NASCAR has so little of this historic footage available. Sadly, NASCAR sent almost all of it to a landfill in Florida. At the time, Big Bill France never thought any of NASCAR’s history was worth keeping.
