I grew up learning how to drive on the gravel roads of western Washington State. In whatever car my stepdad trusted me with, I was taught the finer points of car control: the burnout, the slide, the J-turn, e-brake drifting, transition drifting and bootlegger turns. By the time I was fourteen, I was cocky enough that I could take the Mercury Comet we had and do an impromptu Dukes Of Hazzard scene up and down whatever dirt road I was on. Fast forward some years, and I learn who Colin McRae, Tommi Mäkinen, Stig Blomqvist, and Ari Vatanen are when we got Speedvision added to our cable contract. All of a sudden I was seeing cars I never knew existed being driven by people who had car control that bordered on telepathy…I wanted in. Badly. But while circumstances set me on a different path, I still wonder how much fun it would be to fling a car though a narrow path in the woods at speeds well beyond the realm of safety. Matt Farah of The Smoking Tire recently took up an invite from the Florida International Rally and Motorsport park, and we find him there, jammed into a Subaru STI prepared for rally. You’ll notice a theme as he tries to keep the Subaru out of the weeds: “This is difficult!”
