Wait…A What? This Four Door 1978 Cougar Is A Rare Find – Maybe Not A Good Find But Certainly A Rare Find

(By Greg Rourke) – When I (an almost 60 year old gearhead) think of the Mercury Cougar, I think of the first cousin to the Mustang. Dyno Don’s funny cars and Fast Eddie’s Pro Stockers. Even the getaway car Richard and Seth Gecko used in the first “From Dusk Till Dawn.” What I do NOT think of is a 4 door sedan. Well, live and learn.

I saw this pristine example when searching for nothing in particular on Craigslist Yoopers. A quick bit of Wikipedia shows the Cougar was Mercury’s second longest lasting model, behind the Grand Marquis (think Uncle Buck.) It also shows the forth and fifth generation were still available as the XR-7 two door, but also as four doors and station wagons. Kinda doing a disrespect to the spirit of the Cougar Eliminator, yeah?
Anyway, here it is, a claimed one-of-107-in-this-color-combo, 25,000 mile quadraport Cougar. Resplendent in it’s railroad track 5 MPH bumpers,  choked down 302 and 1978 air in the spare tire, it seems a bargain at $5500. It’s perfectly presentable, I think I’d put a set of Cragar SS wheels on it, a rumbly dual exhaust and hit cruise night.
With rampant tin worm here in the Rust Belt, a rust free anything for cheap money is tempting.

And curiously the ad was flagged for removal.
Maybe someone thought the world didn’t need to be reminded of the travesty that is a 4 door Cougar.
