Historic Footage: The 1983 Late-Model Sportsman Coca-Cola 200 at Rockingham

I defy you to find a better collection of cars in one race after 1975 than this 1983 late-model sportsman run at Rockingham in 1983. Just look at the cars: GM X-cars of virtually every type (Novas, Venturas and Omegas, for sure) running with a 72-74 Dodge Challenger, an A-body LeMans, and Ford Fairmonts battled it out in NASCAR’s junior leagues as drivers honed their skills. If you want good, close circle-track racing, this is how it’s done. Watch specifically for Dale Earnhardt in his Wrangler-liveried Pontiac Ventura…even in the early days, Earnhardt could run up on the back of another car and draft like there was no tomorrow. It makes us want to scour Craigslist for a basket case of a Nova that we could hack up into a race car. Hmmm…
