(Words and photos by Greg Rourke) – A coupla two-three weeks ago Bob Chiluk took us on a photographic tour of the Iron Gate Motor Condos in Naperville, Illinois. I decided I needed to see it in person, so this past Saturday it was for Chrome And Coffee.
Iron Gate Motor Condos is a place to keep your toys. Oh sure, you could rent a space down at the U-Store-It, but Iron Gate has a few more amenities. Like polished concrete floors you can eat off of, mezzanines above the parking area, and many have outdoor decks. Guys have installed kitchens, bars, conference rooms, and most have multiple lifts. Not just for servicing your car, you park your 66 Corvette and 69 Z/28 on the lift so you have room for the Ferrari and Lambo underneath.
So what kind of automotive art was on display at the monthly Chrome And Coffee event? Not at all what I thought I’d see. I’m not an aficionado of the exotics, so I had to go by the emblems. Porsches, Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Mercedes, and other supercars of all vintages were everywhere, I’m clueless as to the models. A Day Two Hemi Roadrunner in Sassy Grass green sported a “sold” sign. An LS powered tube chassis creation looked like fun. Speaking of LS, a Miata was in attendance with one under the hood. When was the last time you saw an early Mustang with a full house inline 6 under the hood? Or an Indy car mounted on a wall? A claimed one-of-one Cadillac CTS-V station wagon? Muscle cars of all marques rubbed elbows with the exotics. Not literally of course.
I’m guessing the price for one of these condos is in the “if you have to ask” category. I don’t think they would be building more of them if empty units were languishing. They are building more units.
The coffee and donuts were excellent.
