That cloud of smoke is encircling a Can-Am car that has locked up the brakes and is spinning off track. That black blur you see is a GT40 heading right into the mess. Thankfully that car escapes any sort of damage and the incident seems to be over with the Can-Am machine trundling across the grass. Unfortunately it is really just getting started and you have to stick around to the end to see the real mess that gets caused once the driver of the car in the grass tries to reenter the track.
During my time as a road racing announcer I saw more wreckage happen on track re-entries than virtually any other situation. It is tough to figure out where the Can-Am driver’s head was at in this one because he starts to accelerate across the grass and gets the car into a four wheel slide sideways which he carries right onto the asphalt. That means he hit the pavement with tires covered in crud, with the wheels turned, and with too much speed.
The car shows itself to be un-driveable and as that’s happening a whole crowd of traffic shows up, including one guy who was minding his own business in a GT40 and then had to avoid this skidding car. He locks the brakes and wails a guy in what looks to be a Scarab or something and then the video ends.
While I don’t have a track reentry procedure manual in front of me I can promise you that the correct way is not THAT way.
