We first learned about this video from a friend who was in Germany on a wing and a prayer racing trip, this time in the deep end of the pool to compete in a qualifying race for the legendary 24 Hours of Nurburgring Race last year. He was racing with an established team over there and they were thundering around the course in a rowdy, V8 powered Audi RS4, trying to earn a bid into the field at the 24. The whole thing came together at the last minute while the rest of his life was on fire at the same time but he managed a plane ticket to Germany with his helmet and firesuit.
Our buddy told us about the video because he has literally been studying it like the Kennedy assassination film. He’s been on the course before but only having some fun and not in competition. He was “learning” on the fly and that’s all well and good in a street car, once he straps into the Audi that has full race slicks on it and will catch air at points on the track, he needs a little more than what it felt like in a Ford Focus. This film, he says, is the best one ever made for actually learning the line around the track. What completely blew us away is the fact that there are few, if any straights of consequence. The wheel is constantly being moved in one direction or the other and the car is very ever in a “straight ahead” position and not transitioning from one turn to the next. Jackie Stewart’s famous assessment of the track as the Green Hell makes a lot more sense when a guy (who instructs on the course TO MAKE A LIVING) takes you through every bend, twist, dip and hill.
