(By Tom Lohnes) – Lexus, after some pretty weak sales on their coupes over the past five years has decided to make another one. Meet the UC, a BMW 2-series fighting luxury take on the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86.
Wait…a luxurious BRZ? Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of it? Well yes, but Lexus sees a market here, and they already have a platform to do it. Based on the Subaru BRZ platform, the Lexus UC is going to be a tad bit longer and wider than the Subie, for more space inside and out. For an engine it will use the same 2.4-liter Naturally aspirated Flat-4, and allegedly an electric motor will be attached for upwards of 300 horses. Transmission choices should be the same, and it will definitely be cool to see a Lexus with a stick again.
But who is this appealing to? Well, the same miniscule amount of people who buy the BMW 2-series, so 5,307 people last year to be exact. Oddly enough, I can sort of see this thing being a hit. If it starts around $40,000, has a manual and enough power to save it from being dead slow in the straights, as well as a nice interior, why wouldn’t people buy it?
I guess only time can tell.
Hot looking car. Hot looking cars should be HOT. This combo sounds sort of warm perhaps.
