(By Greg Rourke) – My first car was a 1969 Datsun 510. Actually, it was titled as a 1969, but it had a bunch of 1968 parts. I found that out when I ordered a taillight lens from the dealer and it didn’t fit. They said Datsun would use up previous years parts on newer models, or even title complete unsold cars as the next model year. Dad bought this one brand new in 1969.
I ended up with it when Dad tried to trade the barely running 510 on a new 1973 Nova hatchback, but they only offered him $100. He gave it to me instead. Back then they were just like so many other import econoboxes, cheap transportation. Keep in mind 20 MPG was cause for celebration. What separated the Datsun from others of this era was 4 wheel independent suspension, and basically the 240Z engine minus two cylinders. It was a sorta-kinda poor mans BMW 2002. Unfortunately, most got driven to death and sent to the crusher before they were ten years old. Now, they are collectible.
I keep my eyes open for an affordable 510 (or a “nickle and dime” as the kids call them). This ain’t it. Is this example, which includes a mess of spares and a 20 year old trailer, worth the 55k ask? I wouldn’t be surprised.
Always one of my favorite Oriental cars…
