The Same But Bigger, And Add A Zero: Mazda Has Launched The CX-50 For An Expanded American Market

The Same But Bigger, And Add A Zero: Mazda Has Launched The CX-50 For An Expanded American Market

(By Tom Lohnes) – The Mazda CX-5 is a very well-established crossover in the US and global markets. It’s unique design and nimble driving dynamics make it a great seller for Mazda, but apparently us Americans want more compact Mazda crossover. So, Mazda is launching another vehicle into the same segment, and it is very confusing.

First off, why? Well, the CX-5 is a great vehicle, but apparently it isn’t spacious enough for American needs. So, Mazda is launching this new vehicle which is quite literally a CX-5 with a wider track and a bigger cargo area as a companion to the older model, not a replacement. It’s confusing, I know. To make matters worse, the names are extremely similar. Called the CX-50, this new crossover is a headache.

But that’s apparently what customers want. The CX-5 has sold nearly 130,000 units this year, and Mazda expects the CX-50 to add another 150,000. The compact crossover segment is a hot one, so I don’t doubt it. But I’m going to guess that since the CX-50 is a better CX-5, it will steal sales of the older model, just like the Bronco Sport did to the Escape.

Interesting move Mazda. They have a whole fleet of Crossovers coming soon, as well as a new Miata and an alleged return of the RX nameplate coming before 2025. I’m very intrigued.
