If there is anything that we can critique about Mighty Car Mods, it’s that they tend to be averse to both Australian and American cars. American cars in general have to be something of a pain in the ass to get in Australia, we’d guess, but not one Holden or one Ford from an Aussie channel is a bit of a surprise. That ends now, because Moog recently bought a Holden Kingswood…ok, an HQ-era Holden of some kind…that is a former race car. This Holden used to be a part of the HQ Racing series, which required cars to be within the noise of 3,000 pounds even, about four inches off of the ground, and it must’ve been powered by one of the Holden six-cylinders, either the 202, Red, Blue or Black engine. with one 1-bbl Stromberg carburetor, three-speed manual trans and a 3.55 rear axle. The goal was to keep the cost of racing low and accessible in a full-spec single-model racing series.
Now, we wouldn’t be too shocked to see these two tear into the Holden six. Marty and Moog have had no issue building just about any other inline six, but when Moog opens up the engine, the first thing Marty notices is the amount of room in the engine bay. We genuinely think that these two are playing up their ignorance of the Holden, but there is no way in hell you’re convincing us that they aren’t seeing a V8 swap in their near future. We hope they do something other than build a burnout car with this Holden…it looks pretty badass as a race machine, and we hope some good horsepower is doing a little more than just frying tires. C’mon…this is halfway to what Yank gearheads picture the old Trans Am cars were. Make it roar, make it grip, and go enjoy some of the older, bolder flavors!
There is no way that doesn’t end with some sort of turbo V-8. It may be a Toyota or Nissan V-8 instead of an LS. But you can tell they have a plan for that to be a track car/ burnout car with a stupid big turbo on a V-8.
Or a Barra.
I believe the Kingswoods were wagons or upper trim 4 door sedans. A 2 door coupe like that was called the Monaro!
I’m really happy to see some classic Aussie iron on the show, I like the guys and enjoy the show but the multiple Japanese “kei” cars never really were my thing
I watched this last night and I have to say I found it a little cringeworthy that 2 Aussies had virtually no clue about HQ’s and Holdens in general…dont get me wrong, I like MCM and maybe i’m old but sheesh for car guys to know nothing about one of the most bread and butter Aussie cars was a bit disconcerting to say the least. Personally I’d like to see them do exotic crazy mods to the 202, simplest motor on the planet but huge potential to make good power. I like LS’s but they’ve done them already a few times, and there are a million Holdens with LS swaps already…hope they either do something really unusual or stick with the red motor..
