Do you hate seeing old racing cars retired to pretty lawn shows? I do. I get that part of what I am seeing accounts to a form of hero worship…the car ran it’s races, earned it’s accolades, and after years of competition it’s time to ease off of the pedal and to take it easy. There isn’t one car made that will last forever and racing puts incredible stress upon every component of a car. But you don’t have to put a racing car completely out to pasture to enjoy it’s successes. Sometimes, you need to get it out of the garage, get the engine warmed up just a little bit, and get your gear on. Racing cars are appreciated for what they can do and you’ll never, ever see that on a concours show’s parade field. On some gravel road somewhere in Belgium, with mud and grit clinging to the fenders and fans standing in the snow willingly to watch as the cars fly by? That’s how enthusiasts, real enthusiasts, prefer seeing their heroes: in action.
