(Photos by Jeff Burghardt) – Yesterday we showed you Mike Burghardt’s sweet, sweet photos from the NASCAR Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway and today we’re right back at you with more great stuff from the Burghardt, this time it is Jeff’s photos that we’re looking at. Through these photos, you may end up thinking the same thing we did which was along the lines of “Wow! These things are built like anvils.” The amount of times you’ll see cars with two wheels a foot or more in the air (at speed) is duly matched by the time said wheels smashed back down to Earth every time that it happened. Each and every lap those cars were clipping the curbing and leaping (halfway) into the air then landing again and they did it for hundreds of miles, over and over. The driver’s have to get pretty beat up in that situation as well but we’re oddly more concerned with the suspension components….because we’re weird.
Like we said yesterday, Sonoma is one of the best races to watch on television of the NASCAR season because of the course layout and the driver aggression that gets played out over the course of the race. Fenders get shredded, transmissions die ugly deaths, and “offs” as the Europeans in the group would say, are both frequent and frequently spectacular. Sure, the “road course” chassis are tweaked to make the cars better at going right and left but let’s be honest here, no matter what they do the laws of physics can only be bent so far. Drivers sure work for it at this one.
