We’ve addressed the difference between demolition derby events in the United States and banger racing in the U.K. before. In America, we put a bunch of violent, nearly apocalyptic-looking tanks into a pit and let them go until there’s only one car left struggling around. Across the pond, they take a slightly more sporting approach…under the guise of a race, the drivers proceed to weed each other out through various different encounters that all result in a loud crashing noise, bodywork folded like origami, and we aren’t talking just once or twice. The Brits will dog-pile a wreck without so much as a second thought and they will beat the unholy hell out of just about any and everything they can get to move fast enough around a track. We’ve seen everything from British cars that, in all honesty, should be extinct simply on age alone to some of the largest Yank tanks built. How out of place is an early 1970s Oldsmobile 98 on UK roads? It might as well be the semi truck with the “WIDE LOAD” signs on it, being led and followed by a mob of vehicles to make sure nothing gets hurt in transit. On the track, a car like that Olds, or a 1970s Monte Carlo, or a Lincoln limo should do well, right?
