(By Tom Lohnes) – After 12 long years, a new Z car has arrived, and it doesn’t disappoint.
Replacing the 370Z, the Z Proto/400Z/Fairlady Z made a giant splash in the car community at its reveal. Using the VR30DETT from the Infiniti Q50 and Q60 red sport 400, the new Z has already topped the BMW Z4/Toyota Supra that it rivals.
Transmission choices include a 10-speed automatic and yes a six-speed manual. Featuring a mix of 240Z and Z32 300ZX styling, the Z proto is styled just retro enough to look cool. On the inside, the Z proto is completely redesigned, with a fully digital gauge cluster and Nissan’s not-great infotainment system. Nevertheless, a bad modern infotainment system is a lot better than the horrible one the 370Z had. So, this car really makes the A90 Supra irrelevant, and that should be a signal to Toyota to make their own car, even if it’s not as good.
If this thing has any handling aspect from the 370Z, it is going to blow the Supra out of the water. Hopefully it’s priced to compete too, because $60,000 for a Supra just isn’t it. Maybe a $40,000 starting price?
The grille looks like a bit too literal a copy of the 240Z without its bumper. Maybe they should have broken the area up with something bumper-like across it?
Looks like an alien that has “fetus like” looks. They must have fired the “style lines” people in mass or was it a Covid inspired layoff?
I love all of the 240z throw backs. Only thing that can hold that car back is the weight which I have heard no official word on
