All New For ’22: The Next Generation Of The Subaru WRX and WRX STI Are Set To Arrive In 2022

(By Tom Lohnes) – Notoriously known for its vape-loving fanbase, the Subaru WRX has long been the staple of cheap, fun, AWD, performance. With a racy STI model, a flat-four with questionable reliability, and a standard 6-speed stick, the WRX is a great deal as long as you don’t tune it to too much power.

But the WRX and STI are getting quite old with the STI using the now-ancient EJ engine platform and the general chassis dating back to 2001 when the WRX/STI came out in America. Big news! The next generation is coming in 2022 and here’s what to expect.

A Manual: Subaru loves the manual transmission, and they prove that with offering a slick, 6-speed stick in the compact Crosstrek crossover. It is safe to say the manual was the transmission to get over the CVT in the current-gen car, and I think that will stay the case, even though a quick-shifting DCT will likely be an option.

Turbo(s): Most likely, Subaru are using a modified version of their punchy FA24B Turbo flat four, and the STI is basically confirmed to have 400 horsepower. With the hottest FA24B right now having 260 horsepower, they are a ways off. That power number is good for the WRX, but the STI is supposed to be the ultimate Japanese performance sedan, so maybe another turbo, or maybe a hybrid system is in the works.

Same old looks: Subaru isn’t really known for edgy styling, and the All-new Legacy and Outback are barely distinguishable from the old models. So, expect the handsome WRX and STI to basically look the same, unless they pull an SVX or new BRZ an completely revamp it.

Competitive price: The base WRX right now costs just a hair over $30,000, so maybe the new model will get a couple grand price jump, but base models will still be modest. The STI will likely eclipse $50,000 when equipped right.

So, if you want an all-new WRX/STI, then you better get saving, but right now Subaru dealers are offering some pretty sweet incentives on old models.
