Fun For Fuddy-Duddy: The Replacement For the VW Golf In America Won’t Exactly Make Your Palms Sweat

Fun For Fuddy-Duddy: The Replacement For the VW Golf In America Won’t Exactly Make Your Palms Sweat

(By Tom Lohnes) – Are you guys exited for the new VW Golf? Yeah, me too. But, you should only be really excited if you’re European, because the Golf is dead in America in favor of the literal blandest vehicle ever, the Volkswagen Taos.

Volkswagen has some cool cars coming in the next few years, such as the sporty Arteon and cool electric bus and dune buggy with retro styling. That being said, having cool retro cars doesn’t mean you can throw your best-selling vehicle away in favor of a crossover, Right?

Well, Volkswagen sure doesn’t think that way. The Taos is basically a golf on stilts wearing some plastic cladding to make it “tough”. Power comes from a boring 1.4-liter inline-4 and is routed to the front of all four wheels through a DCT that uses the famous “nub” shifter. Thankfully you can still get the golf GTI and Golf R stateside, just not the base version that sold 30 million copies since its launch in the mid 70’s. Styling is mundane, and the cargo space is actually less than the normal Golf’s.

If you really need a high seating position, please direct yourself to the bigger and better Tiguan and Atlas models Volkswagen offers. I’m sure the Golf will return once this stupid crossover craze dies down, but until then, the Taos is all we have.
