It has been said that racing a Mini is like wrestling a bear inside a phone booth and after watching this video we can see why. Racer Dickie Maeden is the pilot here and he’s the one getting the workout of a lifetime as he hustles the Mini around with the rest of the touring car class at Goodwood. Totally awesome stuff but it did not get off to a good start for Dickie.
This video shows us that, in fact, every race is a drag race. Seriously. Maeden did not have the car in gear when the flag flew and he got passed by about everyone that did. It was an ugly start and one of those “slip of the mind” things that happens to human beings in every situation you can imagine. As the field wooshes by him, Dickie jams ‘er in gear and sets off after them.
This whole video is a five minute long automotive scrum. Great racing with passing, screaming engines, and all kinds of aggression in the corners. The chucks the car through the course’s chicane like no one’s business, he loses ground to some more powerful cars on the straights and then powers right back up to them in the corners. It is all happening while the steering wheel is moving around like some sort of Vegas table game prop. Seriously, this guy is working his ass off inside this particular car. So fun to watch!
