One may not immediately place a 1980 Trans Am at the forefront of awesome hill climbing machines but then again, they have probably never seen this video before. While we do not know what year this video was made in we do know that it was filmed at the Knox Mountain Hill Climb in British Columbia, Canada. We also know that it is very, very awesome and that this hill climb is pretty high stakes. There appear to be more than a few places where a long fall would come to anyone who screwed up a turn or botched the braking zone.
The car has no visible roll cage and the driver seems to be wearing a fire jacket and fire gloves. This is a healthy runner for sure and the guy wheeling the car has no problems grabbing gears and keeping the throttle mashed as hard as he can for as long as he can on multiple stretches of this climb.
In parts the trees start to become blurs as the big Pontiac makes steam. A stock 1980 Trans Am would be about as exciting as watching Jello form up on this deal but with all the power that the built 455 is delivering we have to believe that this driver was a player!
Hill climbs are awesome and the Knox Mountain course seems to be as long and challenging as any others that we have spotted while cruising the internet. Does anyone know if this one is still going on? Better yet, does anyone know who the guy in the Pontiac is?
The Knox mountain hillclimb is alive and well and running May 18 /l19 in Kelowna BC. A wide variety of cars compete ranging from a Tesla powered Cobra to ice racers and open wheel cars. https://www.knoxmtnhillclimb.ca/
You posted the same video almost exactly two years ago. Yes, the Knox Mountain Hillclimb is still going strong every May long weekend. As the event is run under CACC Time Attack rules, cars in the production classes only require a roll bar as well as the usual safety gear like harnesses, HANS devices. Most cars are fully caged. A quick Google search will reveal many videos of the event. Here is the link to a video of last year’s event. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWD6Jq1atWM
