This is an awesome video with a little bit of mystery to it. It’s internet mystery so it isn’t like some spellbinding TV series but we’re not sure if it is the legendary Hans Stuck driving the Porsche 962 in this video or if it is the equally as legendary Jacky Ickx. Why? Well the video and thumbnail claim that it is Stuck but the scroll at the start of the video in all of its 8-bit glory says that it is Ickx. This said, whoever’s hands are in the Nomex gloves on the wheel is a bad ass to be hammering this killer car around the legendary Hockenheim Ring in Germany at full tilt.
The Porsche 962 was a resounding commercial success for Porsche in terms of racing car construction. They made like 100 of them over the years and they were competitive through the 1980s and long into the 1990s with guys entering them at LeMans into the mid-90s, shockingly. The engine is a turbocharged flat six. We’re pretty sure that these cars all ran a single turbo as opposed to a twin turbo because of the IMSA series in America where many landed did not allow twins.
We remember watching the IMSA prototypes back in the 80s and these cars were so cool and futuristic looking that they captured our attention. We had no idea how blazingly fast they were or how the drivers were tested to their ultimate limits when it came time to actually go racing.
Watch how much work Stuck…or Ickx is doing to drive this thing. You can hear it wanting to spin the tires off of all the corners and all. Also, check out the massive Hockenheim grandstand and know that the straight is where they run the FIA drag race every year and it draws the most massive crowd in the sport, globally.
Good stuff here!
