It’s still bizarrely sad to refer to Jim Pace in the past tense. The man who can and did drive everything was a staple for years here at BangShift because of the killer videos he was in like this one. Pace passed away after an illness several weeks ago and we’re still not really able to wrap our heads around it. This video which was posted from the HSR Classic 24 at Daytona is bad ass. Jim is in a twin turbocharged Porsche 962 and he’s on a full power stint in the middle of the night giving us the narration of just about every turn and movement he makes.
One would think that it could be a distraction to do something like this but when you listen to Jim’s Mississippi accent and how his demeanor and professionalism come through you begin to understand that Jim is simply verbalizing the things he is saying to himself mentally. I have long wondered how the best racing drivers are able to maintain their concentration in an endurance environment and it seems like Jim answers that question here.
It’s not considering the length of your stint, it is considering the attack of the next corner. The time will pass and if you can maintain that corner to corner discipline, you’ll eventually get to the end of your time behind the wheel.
The internet is good for certain things. Being able to check in on Jim doing what he was put on the planet to do in perpetuity is one of those things.
