Normally when we talk about street legal tribute funny cars we’re actually talking about street cars that wear a period paint job or have a look close to something that would have been found on a race track in days of yore. Well this 1963 1/2 Galaxie is so far beyond that we’re not sure it is even a tribute anymore and may have entered its own realm. The car is not only painted to look just like the one Dan Gurney drove all those years ago but it has an engine that is damed close to what the car ran on the track, the stance is perfect, it has been gutted inside to mirror the right looks, it has the right roll bar, the right steel wheels, etc. It is basically a legit 1963 stock car with mufflers on it!
Everyone thinks of Dan Gurney on the international scene racing sports cars and open wheelers but the reality is that the guy was a terror in whatever he sat in and the guy sat in a bunch of stock cars. He owned the Riverside race for years and was a formidable guy on the ovals as well. Pretty cool that this was done in the Gurney livery and not one of the other Ford guys of the time. The engine is cool in the fact that it is a 390 but wears the heads that the larger 406 that powered this sucker would have had on it. The manifolds are the right cast iron headers that were used on these babies at the races and the dash/interior treatment is brutal in its spartan nature but totally correct for the era represented.
What do you think? BangShift approved?

oh god yesssssss…….I’d drive that big fellah everywhere! fantastic!
Actually I love everything but the paint about this car . If it were mine I’d strip off all the stupid ‘ tribute ‘ decals .. leave it plain Jane – milk toast white .. and have a ‘ Sleeper ‘ worthy of the description .. scaring the hell out of more than a few modern performance cars along the way
If it’s a NASCAR tribute, it better have a thunderously loud exhaust that makes little kids cry. I would drive this car all day, every day and break necks.
Dan Gurney? Try Fred Lorenzen. Ford’s “Golden Boy” or “Fast Freddie”. Fred made this #28 Holman & Moody car famous. He was the first NASCAR driver to win over $100,000.00 in a single season (1963). He won the Daytona 500 in 1965 & was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame this year. Great driver! One of my favorites.
