The Brougham Bomber: This 1975 Hurst/Olds Is Simply Meant To Be As It Is – Big Blocked And Capable

The Brougham Bomber: This 1975 Hurst/Olds Is Simply Meant To Be As It Is – Big Blocked And Capable

“Time heals all wounds”. You’ve heard those words, I’m sure. You let the emotions of whatever event simmer down to nothing, then you can take stock in what was important and what still has meaning. For The House of Muscle host Mike Musto, that time has taken a few years, because the car you will see showcased is the car that shut him down back when he and the “Mr. Angry” 1968 Charger that Musto is infamous for were running on Bullrun. Due to issued that involved high altitude and a very picky big-block, the Oldsmobile defeated the Charger and moved on, while Musto…well, he didn’t take it well.

Facing down the one who defeated you might bring back some memories that you don’t want to remember, but Musto has a great spin on how the car owner, Andre Da Silva. That’s a story that you simply need to let him tell you. Instead, let’s discuss Andre’s 1975 Hurst/Olds for a minute. Look, you know and I know that the Hurst/Olds that year was a dolled-up Cutlass that came with either the Rocket 350 or the 455 and that they aren’t common, especially considering how hot a commodity the Cutlass was in the mid 1970s…this was one of the hottest sellers period and for 1976, would be the best-selling car, period. This is also the bad old days of smog control and Brougham-ness, so you have to deal with an overstuffed interior graced by the open windows that are Hurst Hatches and a “big-block” (we know, save your breath) that might have broken 200 horsepower on a good day. At least it made torque to move the big A-body.

Some still see big chrome bumpers and wince, but if you can’t make a large-cube Oldsmobile move out in this day and age, you simply aren’t trying. The 1970s GM A-bodies are surprising handlers, they have more room than you’ll ever need and when done properly, look restrained but good. And again, there’s a story on why a 1975 Olds in the first place…but I’ll let Andre tell you that story.

Its funny… the only reason I remember this car is I was about 15 when Bullrun was on & Mike’s Charger in my eyes was the greatest car on the planet!! I was so mad about him losing to this… Oldsmobile… that I never watched another episode!

I was angry & bitter, how could a stupid old persons car take down the greatest muscle car ever made??

10 years later I’ve developed quite the affinity for the Olds brand & even the brougham cars are starting to grow on me…

I watched this episode last night and like always I was enthralled in Mike’s storytelling. & Andre’s bit of an underdog story with the show & I feel in love with the car and all of its quirks, it may never be the hero car that black 68 Charger is… but I sure wouldn’t mind this one in my driveway!
    Funny how time changes things?

The vortex generators on the roof are backwards, the pointed end should face the front of the car.
