BangShift Daily Tune Up: The Dave Edmunds Jam Slipping Away Featuring Sideways Dirt Track Action From England!

BangShift Daily Tune Up: The Dave Edmunds Jam Slipping Away Featuring Sideways Dirt Track Action From England!

I have no idea what trips memories in my head. Something reminded me of this video, which I remember seeing on television in The Gap as one of my ex wives was trying on 37 pairs of pants and then not buying any. Dave Edmunds is the artist, Slipping Away is the song penned by Jeff Lynn of ELO.

Who knew they had dirt track racing in England? Certainly not me, but here we are. The cars have the look of the early dirt track bombers we had Stateside, with what look like 1930’s bodies, but with awkwardly long hoods. The driver in the vid tows to the races with a Jaguar, and has a very attractive mechanic. The lettering claims the car is Chevrolet 302 powered, so was it liberated from an early Z28? Maybe the blonde welding under the car in makeup and heels knows.

The song doesn’t seem to have anything to do with racing, but the vid is cool just the same. And while the mechanic is now 30 years older than she was, we can always use another wrench at our shop.

    Those are BriSCA F1 Stockcars.
These are open wheeled British stock cars that first appeared in the 1950’s, comprising of two formulas: F2 run 2 lire engines and F1 run V8’s – usually American.

They race on short oval tracks around the UK and is a ‘contact’ sport i.e nudging your opponent to make them go wide to gain position.
Through a grading system, the Best drivers start at the back and have to work their way through the lower grade drivers to win.
Racing is frenetic, making it a great spectator sport.

The cars in the video are what we call nostalgia stock cars utilizing a period a car body rather than the custom built machines of today.

How about a Bangshift trip to the UK to check out our oval racing scene?
